Lycos was a search engine before it grew into other roles. It began with a research project conducted by Dr. Michael Loren Mauldin in 1994 at Carnegie Mellon University. The search engine was developed, and Lycos became a company and grew rapidly, making its initial public offering (IPO) in 1996. By 1997, it had become one of the first Internet businesses in the world to be profitable. With a growing international presence and the acquisition of Tripod, and other well-known brands - such as Angelfire, Wired Digital, Quote.com and Raging Bull - it became the online destination with the most visits in 1999.

In 2000, the Spanish company Terra Networks purchased Lycos for $5.4 billion, calling the merger Terra Lycos. CEO Bob Davis, who joined the company as its first employee in 1995 departed shortly after the merger, and Terra Lycos was sold in 2004. The new owner, Daum Communications Corporation - at the time, Korea’s second largest Internet portal - changed the name back to Lycos, Inc. after reacquiring the trademark from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006.

A new strategy emerged, with Lycos divesting a number of its properties to focus on entertainment content for an online community. Among the new developments were Lycos Phone and a new version of Lycos Mail, formerly Mailcity.com, that had provisions for sending file attachments of unlimited size.
